Walter Thompson-Hernandez ’09 is a member of the “Surfacing” team at The New York Times, which features stories about underrepresented communities and subcultures around the world. Walter was a contributor to the Winter 2019 issue of Portland Magazine. We caught up with Walter to ask him a few more questions about his fascinating work and his time at UP.

The memorial service for Deputy Justin DeRosier will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 1 p.m. in the Chiles Center. Deputy DeRosier was killed in the line of duty while on patrol in Cowlitz County, Washington. The University is expecting capacity crowds with hundreds of uniformed officers and friends in attendance that day.

Shiley School of Engineering alum Khalid Osman ’16 has received a prestigious Ford Foundation Fellowship. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in construction engineering and project management from the University of Texas, Austin, Osman will receive three years of support through the fellowship.

The University of Portland, a leader among its peer institutions in producing Fulbright U.S. Student Program participants, has announced that five students have been named finalists for the 2019 awards to teach English, do research, or attend graduate school abroad.

University of Portland president, Fr. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C. has announced that Matthew R. Kuhn, Brother Godfrey Vassallo, C.S.C. Professor of Civil Engineering, will serve as interim dean of the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering beginning June 30 until a permanent successor is named. Kuhn has requested that he not be a candidate for the permanent position.

U.S. Highway 101 is world-renowned as a scenic marvel situated close to the Oregon coast, wending its way some 300 miles between the north and south boundaries of Oregon. But that scenic beauty comes at a cost: 101 crosses at least 14 coastal river estuaries on fill, not bridges, disrupting salmon runs, bird migration, and natural water flow.

The University of Portland School of Nursing was ranked as the top school in Oregon to earn an undergraduate degree in nursing by NursingDegrees.com. This honor follows a study that looked at factors such as tuition, student to faculty ratio, and student services.
