Accepted first-year and transfer students (no matter their citizenship status) are automatically considered for merit aid. Transfer students can receive up to $28,000 per year in merit aid. These are awarded to students who qualify based on an evaluation of their grades and strength of academic program. Students who qualify for a merit scholarship are notified with their acceptance letter.

One of the goals of the Office of Financial Aid is to serve students by recognizing that every student has unique financial needs. We help students invest in their futures to attain their educational goals by providing financial options through the financial aid awarding process. Need-based financial aid is determined after a student submits their Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA will be available in December.

For first-year applicants who are graduates of a Catholic high school, in recognition of a commitment to Catholic education and for contributions to the high school community and beyond.
The University offers music scholarships for tuition and private lessons in addition to the University’s financial aid offer. These scholarships are awarded by audition (in-person or recorded). Scholarships are automatically renewable for up to four years assuming continued musical and academic progress. There are also performance grants—awarded by annual audition—for talented students who will make a significant contribution to a UP ensemble, but who are not majors or minors.

The Providence Scholars Program, a partnership between Providence Health and Services (PH&S) and the University of Portland, was created to address the national nursing shortage. Providence Scholars receive tuition assistance in the final five semesters of their bachelor of science in nursing program (junior and senior years). A UP Grant of 25% coupled with assistance from PH&S gives students tuition coverage of just over 80%. The student will sign a three-year, full-time employment contract with PH&S in exchange for tuition coverage.
Transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa (two-year honor society) are also eligible for PTK Scholarships, worth $3000 per academic year at UP. No separate application is required, only proof of membership.
