Dawn Garzon Maaks has over 20 years’ experience as an academic and almost 30 years in nursing. She holds a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Miami, Florida, a master of science with a specialty as a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. During her post-doctoral training, she obtained a master’s in psychiatric epidemiology from Washington University in St. Louis. She joins UP following an appointment as a clinical professor at Washington State University. Dawn is nationally known as a nurse leader and an expert in child health and pediatric mental health in particular and is credentialed as a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner and pediatric mental health specialist. She is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and will be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing this fall. A native of Miami, Florida who “grew up” as an adult in St. Louis, Missouri, Dawn moved to the Northwest in 2016 and enjoys cycling, spending time with her family, and playing with her two young pups. She is excited to join the faculty at UP and to join in the university’s educational and social justice missions.
