Before joining the University of Portland faculty, Matthew Barner conducted research in engineering education while in graduate school at Oregon State University and then worked as a structural engineer at Mackenzie in Portland. Matthew discovered his passion for teaching while working as a private tutor during his undergraduate education. He started his undergraduate studies at Pacific Lutheran University, where he was involved in track and field, and then transferred to Washington State University to finish a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Matthew has volunteered with multiple K-12 programs, including the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) mentor program and Architects in Schools (AiS). He enjoys working with students and faculty to develop new curriculum that enhances student engagement and spurs their passion for engineering. Matthew is a Pacific Northwest native and loves all the outdoor activities the region has to offer. He is a Seattle Mariners fan and loves discussing all things baseball. Matthew enjoys playing pool, reading a good book, loves dogs, and spending quality time with family and friends.
