Brian J. Els grew up on a wheat farm in Eastern Washington, and attended Whitman College where he majored in History. After college, he worked in Seattle before entering graduate school at Indiana University. His masters and doctoral degrees focused on Modern and Early Modern German history. His research focuses on child welfare in Germany and Austria in the 19th century. He teaches courses on Modern Western Civilization, Europe in the Age of Religious War, Disease and Medicine in World History, Modern Germany, and Europe in the Age of Nationalism. He has also taught seminars on the European Family, European Imperialism, and Witch Hunts in European History. Dr. Els has directed UP’s Salzburg summer program several times and enjoys Austrian cuisine and sharing his insights into Austrian culture with students. He lives in North Portland and enjoys skiing, fishing, and hiking.
