About

Dr. Carolyn James teaches courses in precalculus and calculus. She is also the calculus coordinator, oversees the math placement exam for incoming students, and supervises the Math Resource Center. She joined University of Portland in 2015. She has a B.A. in mathematics from Carleton College, an M.B.A. from Johannes Kepler Universität, a MS from Oregon State and a PhD in Mathematics Education from Portland State University. Her research interests include justification and argumentation in the classroom, teacher beliefs, instructional change, and tutor development. Doctor James is originally from southern Oregon. She enjoys playing competitive ultimate frisbee and spending time with her family.
