Gregory Hill has concurrent appointments in the Departments of Mathematics and Environmental Studies. His research looks broadly at applications of mathematics and systems science to environmental and sustainability issues. He was a lead investigator in a National Science Foundation funded study of the use of computer-based tools for decision making in the effort to restore endangered salmon populations in the Columbia River Basin. His work in resilience science has applications including: developing ways to predict ecosystem vulnerability to cascading extinctions; incorporating resilience science into the renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty; and designing forest-based climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in Indonesia. He has developed planning techniques based on resilience science to consult for clients such as the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority in planning to become the regional sustainability clearinghouse and First Nations of Canada in their efforts to achieve self-governance. He regularly consults for the Joint Research Center of the European Union on issues related to quality of scientific advice for policy applications. For 15 years he has been the president of the Institute for Culture and Ecology, an independent research non-profit working on sustainability issues domestically and internationally.
