Dr. Poulami Mitra joined the Biology faculty in the Fall of 2022. Prior to accepting this position, she taught Human Anatomy and Physiology at Portland Community College (Rock Creek campus) and Nutritional Biochemistry at the University of Western States (UWS). Prior to that, she used to be actively involved in biomedical research and has several publications with a long list of citations.  

She earned her doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a specialization in Lipid Cell Signaling from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).  She completed her B.Sc and M.Sc in India, specializing in Human Physiology.  

Dr. Mitra uses visual images, drawings, stories, and fun analogies to help students learn new information. She enjoys being creative and many of her classes include homework assignments where students have to come up with biology models using things around the house.   

Besides work, she is deeply involved in several community service activities. She has served as a Science Fair coordinator for her children's elementary school, as well as a judge for the northwest science expo (NWSE). In addition, she has been part of PCC-PSU’s BUILD EXITO program as a mentor to undergrads.  

She is married with two boys and enjoys as much time as possible with her family.
