Dr. Kenton (Dr. K) teaches both Microbiology and Microbiology Laboratory. In lecture we learn about the cell biology, physiology, and genetics of microorganisms. We focus not only on the pathogens that can infect humans but also on the many beneficial microbes needed for life on this planet. In Microbiology Laboratory students are focused on finding and isolating potentially new antibiotics that can destroy common human pathogens. The semester long research projects enables students to isolate, purify, and identify new bacteria and antibiotics from our local environment. Dr. K’s research focuses on the human pathogen Vibrio vulnificus, and specifically how it is able to steal iron from a host. Dr. K regularly works with undergraduate research students over the summer and throughout the school year.
