Susan Murray received a BS in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Oregon Health & Science University. Despite living in the Pacific Northwest for the past two decades, she remains an avid Green Bay fan—go Pack! She currently teaches Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology for biology majors and an upper division Immunology course with lab. She is interested in integrating fundamental principles of biology across students’ four-year curriculum at UP. Susan collaborates with OHSU faculty as well as UP undergraduates in her research program. Her research interests explore the signals that determine how T cells of the immune system become activated. In particular, she studies i) T cell responses to cytomegalovirus (a herpes virus that infects ~90% of people world-wide) and ii) intracellular signaling pathways that enhance T cell responses upon activation. In her spare time, she hikes, practices yoga, and cheers on her favorite teams—the Purple Lightning Warriors 4th grade soccer team, the Pilots women’s soccer team, and the Green Bay Packers.
