To Our UP Community,
We welcome you to join us in honoring and celebrating Indigenous people on this Indigenous Peoples' Day, October 14, 2024. We acknowledge the harmful legacy and indelible scars of colonialism in the United States; and its impact on the diverse community of Indigenous people. We also appreciate the resilience and continued contributions of the native communities to our campus and the region. We especially thank our students in the Native American Alliance for their presence and engagement. We encourage all UP Community members to learn more about these original caretakers of the land on which University of Portland now sits:
On this day and beyond, may we embrace the spirit of Indigenous people – both past and present – as a guide to understanding, acceptance and respect.
