Faculty Compensation

LEARNING CONTENT

Faculty Leading programs will receive compensation that is built into the program budget comprised of 3 different areas:  

1. Course Instruction - faculty will receive compensation for teaching the proposed course EITHER as part of their in-load salary, or as a separate, budgeted teaching stipend.  Faculty are required to have their instruction compensated.   

  
For 9-month faculty, teaching a faculty-led course or serving as faculty-in-residence (eg. Salzburg and Quito), a separate teaching salary will be offered. In line with offering an adjunct or additional course on campus, a $4,000 stipend will be offered PER COURSE. (If two faculty are team teaching a 3-credit course, they will each receive half of this stipend.)  

 2. Program Coordination – faculty (or staff) program leaders will receive an additional stipend for program coordination, based on length of the program, that is linked to UP Hall Director and Assistant Director salaries.   

Head Faculty Coordinator  

• 2 weeks: $1,250   
• 4 weeks: $2,300   
• 6 weeks: $3,350   

(This is currently based on a HD rate at 25 hours per week, plus additional pre-departure hours, 25 hours was based off of an estimate of hours outside of the classroom, as classroom contact hours should technically be included in the faculty teaching stipend.)   

Assistant Faculty Coordinator (additional faculty or staff)   

• 2 weeks: $650   
• 4 weeks: $1,270   
• 6 weeks: $1,890   

(This is based on an AHD rate at 20 hours per week, plus additional -though fewer- pre-departure hours)   

  
Should Faculty choose to share the roles equally, the total available stipend rate would be split in half.    

 3. Travel/Living Expenses – Faculty Leaders will receive a per diem amount to cover meals and housing that is not already covered in other expenses as part of the program budget. The per diem amount traditionally starts around 50% of the DOS rates.  

Travel Expenses:   

For all faculty and staff traveling to lead programs, regardless of whether they are on a 9- or 12-month contract:   

• All travel costs - airfare & 1 bag (if not included) - least cost (within reason) coach, return through PDX. Taxi/public transportation (lowest, reasonable means) - to/from airport (PDX & overseas), as well as on the ground transportation required for the program.   
• Meal & Incidentals per diem: Half of the Department of State Meals and Incidentals Rate: If program meals, eg. breakfast is included in housing, the total amount will be pro-rated: dinner is 45% of total, breakfast and lunch is 22.5% of total. Large group meals will be accounted in the total per diem stipend as well. (If program requires a higher per diem rate, based on need, this could then be negotiated.)   
• Housing for Faculty leader included - cost of housing any dependents will need to be covered separately by faculty (if faculty needs a larger apartment, or if a provider charges per person, vs per apartment, etc.). (If the program offers housing that includes meals, those meals would be deducted from the total per diem stipend. If a faculty member opted to find alternate housing than what is provided, faculty would only receive a housing allowance equal to the budgeted/provided amount, and the original meal per diem would not be adjusted (see Quito).) Limited meal and lodging expenses prior to the arrival of the students on the program are allowed in cases where arrangements need to be made on site, in advance, but must be approved by the Study Abroad office prior to finalizing the program fee.    
• All activities, tours, and required local transportation for program leaders included in the budget.   

Reimbursements will not be paid for any costs incurred for visiting family members or other persons not identified within the budget created in advance for the program.
