“I started learning German as a first-year student preparing for the Salzburg Year study abroad program. I fell in love with the language and UP allowed me to translate my studies into incredible experiences living, learning, and working abroad. I sang in the Salzburger Domchor on my year abroad (and running on the ancient Olympic racecourse in Greece during Spring Tour was pretty amazing). I studied at the University of Augsburg on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and taught English in a small Austrian village in the Alps after graduation, as part of the US Teaching Assistant program run by Fulbright Austria.
These experiences are a direct thread to my current career at a startup accelerator that helps high-potential German companies launch in other markets around the world. I help run our US programs, from the selection and onboarding of businesses to hosting workshops and recruiting mentors. My experience living in German-speaking countries allows me to assist these startups as they navigate the cultural differences between Germany and the U.S.—be it language, attitudes, or the sweetness level of beverages!
I’ve realized that although it’s important to think hard about your plans after you graduate, it’s okay if you don’t have it all figured out. All you need is the next step, and your community of friends and professors can help you get there. Focus on finding what you’re good at and letting it shine, whatever that means for you.”
