I found my internship at the UP Virtual Job & Internship Expo. Justin Henderson, Enterprise’s Talent Acquisitions Manager, really encouraged me to apply after meeting at the Expo. After a great conversation over Zoom, we connected on LinkedIn, and the whole process happened really quickly from there. I was initially looking for a summer internship, but after shadowing a branch, I wanted to get started as soon as possible to grow within the company.
I started out as a Management Trainee Intern in Daily Rental. During my first three months, all the interns were in a competition based on criteria including sales, number of rental days, rental ready percentage, and calling insurance customers within 20 minutes of the reservation. I placed first and won $1000 – it was fun to share wins like this with my team!
By asking questions, I was able to learn more about fleet management as well as how the branch operated and made a profit. As I learned more about the business and how to best interact with customers, I was periodically put in charge of running reservations at the branch while my managers worked on other tasks. Recently, I transferred to Enterprise’s Truck Division as one of the first interns in the division. It is exciting to help start a new program and learn a new way of business.
Internships help take what we learn in the classroom and see how it’s applied in the real world. They improve the level of professional skills, strengthen personal character, and open doors to more opportunities. This experience helped me gain confidence as a professional and learn how corporate America works. After I graduate from UP, I am interested in staying in Portland, continuing with Enterprise or exploring other options in transportation.
