Jake Silver ’21

Sports Marketing Intern at University of Portland Athletics Department

Major: Marketing, Sustainability minor

Jake Silver“At my internship, I assist with promotions, video projects and marketing’s day-to-day operations as well as create insider emails detailing upcoming games, featured promotions, and recent results. With my role, I am able to collaborate cross-functionally with other campus departments to implement single game and seasonal promotional campaigns. Since I started this internship, I have really developed the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once. I have learned and worked on projects from social media advertising, email marketing, and video creation, to on gamedays interacting with groups and running promotions.

I wanted this internship because I am passionate about sports and I have career aspirations in a related marketing field. Working for the Portland Pilots sports marketing department helped bridge my passion for sports with my professional interests. My favorite part of being an intern was meeting Megan Rapinoe after she won the World Cup!

I believe internships are so important for students because they offer the experience and real-life applications that cannot authentically be brought into courses and classes. The ability to learn on your feet and get exposed to types of positions you find you are either excited and interested in pursuing after college, or you find out a company or industry is not the right place for you. In the future, I hope to work in a marketing, public relations, or front office role for a professional team or a collegiate athletic department.”
