What was it like being among the first in your family to go to college?  Tell us about your story, and what you think has helped you succeed so far at UP?

It was a weird feeling knowing what I was about to go through was something no one in my family went through which meant I had to figure it out on my own. I've grown up doing things on my own whether that be school or work related, I figured I would do the same in college. It wasn't until my third week of college where I felt I was falling behind and felt other students possessed a certain knowledge that I didn't which helped them navigate through college with ease. I realized I had to change how I was approaching things and decided to reach out to staff and professors on so that I could be successful in college. That alone opened many doors, and got me connected and helped me navigate my way through college.

What does it mean for you to be a part of the FGEN community and to be a FGEN Student Ambassador at UP?

It means a lot to me personally to be a part of the FGEN community because it's gives me a chance to connect with other FGENs who not only understand what I go through but know others are going through the same things as myself.

What is your advice to FGEN students at UP who are facing challenges?

The best advice I can give to FGEN students here at UP is to go talk to a professor, staff member or even a roommate and tell them exactly what you're struggling with so they can help or find someone who can help you. Although UP is a relatively small campus if you don't advocate for yourself and address the problems you are facing you will continue to go through it on your own. Also go to office hours professors are getting paid to help you so whether you take that opportunity or not to get help from them they are still getting paid.

Has a mentor played a role in your experience at UP?  How so?

I was lucky enough to know a couple upperclassmen before coming to UP so when I arrived they took me under their wing and got me connected with different clubs, and invited me along to many of the event at UP.

What resources have been significant, meaningful, or helpful for you during your UP experience?

The learning commons have been the most helpful resource on campus because they not only have trained tutors in almost every subject but work at your pass to ensure you leave feeling confident to tackle on similar problems.
