What was it like being among the first in your family to go to college? Tell us about your story, and what you think has helped you succeed so far at UP?
Being the first in my family to go to college has been quite a journey. There have been both ups and downs throughout my experience however I wouldn't change a thing. I've had to develop skills of managing my finances, taking imitative to meet deadlines and be my own advocate because it’s very difficult when you don't have someone to turn to and ask questions about college. My family, friends, and professors have had an immense impact on me and are the reason why I have been able to succeed. The endless support is something I did not thing I would get when coming to college but it turns out many of my professors are FGEN as well and they're very encouraging about going to office hours and asking for help.
What does it mean for you to be a part of the FGEN community and to be a FGEN Student Ambassador at UP?
Being part of this FGEN community means so much to me because I get to help students who are in a place I was not too long ago. The impact that this community has on students is very important because it creates a sense of self-confidence and assurance needed to be successful in college. It provides opportunities and resources that some may not even know about. It further addresses important topics that many first generation students would not know how to navigate such as studying abroad, financial aid, and picking a major.
What is your advice to FGEN students at UP who are facing challenges?
My advice is to keep going even when it gets hard. When you feel like you don't belong or that you don't have what it takes remember that you made it this far for a reason and that people have your back, even people you may not know about. College is not easy, it’s not meant to be easy, its meant to challenge your and push your limits so that you can come out a more knowledgeable person about who you are and the impact you want to make on the world. If you can make it through this, you can make it through anything.
Has a mentor played a role in your experience at UP? How so?
Yes, my freshman year I was given an FGEN mentor who changed my life completely! She always made time for me when I had questions or was struggling with something. She motivated me to change my major when I knew I wanted to but was afraid of the new route I would be taking. She met with me even when she was busy and gave me sincere and helpful advice. She ultimately helped me become who I am today.
What resources have been significant, meaningful, or helpful for you during your UP experience?
The academic resources at UP have been very helpful such as the writing center where I've been to many times. The Career center is also an amazing place, they help review cover letters and resumes for applications. The CAS office has also been an immense help, I've gotten help on what courses to take and even on help applying to internships.
