What was it like being among the first in your family to go to college?

I grew up in a rural neighborhood that valued education and attended a country school until 6th grade. All of the students in this school graduated from college and probably half earned graduate degrees. Never did I not expect to go to college.

Are there any unique challenges you faced as a First Generation student?

I had no idea what I was doing. I just looked at bulletin, figured out classes to take and did what was required. Finished in 3 years. However I never looked at different colleges to attend and missed many opportunities.

Do you have any advice for FGEN students at UP that are facing challenges?

Find a mentor or mentors to give you advice. Learn all the options. Seek the biggest opportunities and do not worry about failure.

How do you feel your experience prepared you, both professionally and personally?

Because I was always operating in a cloud as a student, I always strive to help college students see pathways to greater success then they themselves see.
