Dean Brian Fabien, PhD Dean, Shiley School of Engineering

Brian FabienBrian Fabien is a professor of mechanical engineering, an expert in dynamic systems modeling and has worked in the private sector. He received his PhD, master of philosophy, and master of science in mechanical engineering from Columbia University in New York City and a bachelor of engineering with honors from the City College of New York. Before his work in academia, he worked for a variety of corporate engineering roles at companies like Xerox, PerkinElmer, and Textron. He also served as the lead mechanical engineer overseeing the guidance sensors for the Hubble Space Telescope. As a professor of engineering, he held positions at the University of the West Indies and Ohio University, and served as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the College of Engineering at University of Washington before joining University of Portland in 2020, when he was appointed Dean of the Shiley School of Engineering.

“By focusing on liberal arts as the foundation of engineering education, the Shiley School of Engineering is training the next generation of leaders who will have the technical skills and cultural awareness required to solve our societal challenges,” he says. “It's clear to me that everyone at UP is committed to educating the whole student, not just the mind and the hands, but also the heart.”

Dr. Fabien looks forward to spending time with family and friends in retirement. We are grateful for his leadership and presence on The Bluff in his time as Dean.
