Rev. Bill Hayes, S.J. - Christus Magister Medal
Receiving the Christus Magister medal, for lifetime service to the three central tenets of the University of Portland’s mission (teaching, faith, service) is Father Bill Hayes S.J., of Jesuit High School in Portland. Fr. Bill is a Jesuit legend – he is Jesuit High, in a lot of ways. He arrived in 1960 as first vice-principal, and then served as principal and president at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, vice president of Seattle University, and a pastor of St. Joseph’s in Seattle before coming back to Jesuit as president in 1984, and utterly changing it – finances, coeducation, buildings, reputation, pastoral sense.
