After nearly 90 years, the University of Portland said goodbye to Howard Hall. The hall was the home of Pilot athletics until the Chiles Center's construction in 1984, and for the past three decades it was the intramural gym, closing only when the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center opened in 2015.
Demolition took place between July and August 2018. During the demolition, material was loaded on dump trucks and transported to the River Campus for sorting and recycling. It took approximately 175 loads to completely remove the building.
A new academic center, Dundon-Berchtold Hall, was built on the site of Howard Hall. It opened in 2019.
