The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) ensures compliance with federal regulations associated with animal use and well-being in educational and research settings. The committee is responsible for reviewing the University’s program for the humane care and use of animals to ensure UP is complying with all applicable standards and guidelines, including the policies of the University of Portland, Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations (AWAR).
The University of Portland does not have any animal facilities on- or off-campus.

Note, investigative research and classroom and laboratory educational activities that require the use of recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules technology or infectious agents, and/or involve human tissue or body fluids, or involve animals that may carry zoonotic disease must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Research that includes human subjects must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). IACUC and IBC approval must be obtained prior to or concomitant with IRB review.
