Before You Arrive

Technology Orientation Presentation

Students should view the the most recent Technology Orientation presentation to learn about the technology available at University of Portland including academic software, important online resources, printing, network and wifi access, and computer labs.

Computer and Related Equipment

All students should plan on bringing the following equipment to enable in classroom and online instruction via Zoom or Teams:

  • A personal laptop (Windows or Mac) with integrated web camera that meets the recommended technical specifications for academic use.
  • A suitable set of headphones (with mic) for a quality audio experience.
  • A portable charger.

Check with your Dean or Academic Advisor for any further specific technology recommendations or requirements for your major.

The School of Nursing has specific requirements to accommodate computerized testing.

Prepare your computer for campus by visiting the Software Download center and installing the following FREE software:

  • Anti-virus Software - REQUIRED for ALL computers on the UP network
  • Microsoft Office - Also available at portal.office.com
  • Zoom App
  • Teams App
  • Read and Write Gold -  Accessibility software
  • VMWare View - Enables access to student courseware via a virtual windows desktop

NOTE: If a student needs financial assistance for the purchase of a laptop for academic use, they can inquire about assistance through the financial aid office. If for any other reason a student is unable to bring a laptop to campus for academic use, a limited number of laptops will be made available for check out for semester long duration from the Clark Library.

Printer

The majority of students make use of on-campus printers located in each dorm, the library, computer labs and other central locations on campus. Personal printers are allowed as long as they connect directly to your computer via USB or Bluetooth. We do not allow personal printers to connect to our campus wired or wireless network.

In addition, students can print from their mobile devices using webprint.up.edu.

Phone

Most students make use of a personal smartphone. Please note that cellular signal strength within buildings varies widely from dorm to dorm. We recommend taking advantage of voice-over-WiFi, which is now offered by all major carriers. Learn more from your carrier and phone providers. If a land line is desired, students may request a phone to use in their room for the academic year by contacting the help desk (help@up.edu).
