University of Portland student newspaper, The Beacon, won the Apple Award for "Best Newspaper" for colleges/universities with fewer than 5,000 students.

The Apple Awards are the "Best in Show" awards given at the annual College Media Association convention in New York City. More than 1,000 student journalists and advisers from student media organization from across the country attended the event.

"I frequently tell students on The Beacon staff that just because they find the work difficult and stressful doesn't mean things aren't going well," said Nancy Copic, The Beacon advisor. "With each challenge, they learn, improve and become more resilient. When accolades like the Apple Award affirm their hard work in a national arena, it's so rewarding."

Other Apple Award "Best Newspaper" winners were, The Miami Hurricane of the University of Miami (10,000+ students) and The Eagle of American University (5000-10,000 students).

Copic attended the convention, along with six selected Beacon staffers: Katie Dunn, Malika Andrews, David DiLoreto, Rebekah Markillie, Parker Shoaff and Jacob Fuhrer.

It featured speakers from the New York Times, ESPN, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, CBS, NBC, ABC, Buzzfeed, Vice Media-HBO, Mashable and other prominent media organizations. Other highlights included private tours of CNN, Sports Illustrated and Bloomberg News.

In addition to the Apple Award, The Beacon has won four other national awards since September including a Third Place Pinnacle Award for Best Weekly College Newspaper and three Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for Editorial Writing, News Feature and Interactive Graphic for Digital Media.

Last year, The Beacon took home 25 awards from the annual statewide collegiate media competition of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association including First Place for General Excellence in the weekly college newspaper category. The newspaper placed first in categories including website, series, feature story, news story, graphic, house advertisement, overall photography, sports news photo, and feature photo.
