The University of Portland has begun renovation of the Pilot House, which historically housed the campus bookstore and a small dining area and lounge. The renovation, with an estimated cost of $2.4 million, is set to take about six months to complete, according to James Ravelli, vice president for University Operations.
The redesigned facility is expected to be a place that extends the community experience of the University. It will be open in the evenings for late-night activities, such as Pilots After Dark, and provide for music, comedy, and other entertainment. It will have a comfortable lounge area with seating and a friendly ambiance, serving pub-type fare and beverages.
“It will enhance the residential nature of the campus and provide a gathering spot for the community as well as for students,” Ravelli said. “We want it to be a fun place and a nice option for visitors and guests, a place where alumni can gather after an athletic event.”
Funding for this renovation is entirely made possible by donations. Lead contributors include Fedele Bauccio ’64, ’66 MBA; Pacific Seafood; Pudjiono Djojonegoro ’80; Jim Murphy ’91 MBA; Mike Nelson, ’76; and Darlene Shiley.
The Pilot House has welcomed thousands of students and alumni over the years and can continue to do so with the proposed renovations. The current Pilot House was completed in January 1951 and replaced a wooden structure that had been erected in 1939 on the site of the current library.
Since 2010, the University has renovated the Clark Library and Bauccio Commons, which provide places for students to study and enjoy a meal. In addition, by the start of the Fall semester 2015, students will have access to the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, currently in the final stages of construction.
