Matthew Rygg, PhD, has been named associate vice president for student affairs at University of Portland. He will provide leadership and support to residence life, student activities, the Moreau Center and the Career Center. He also will co-chair the Early Alert program, serve as a deputy Title IX coordinator for students and direct assessment and diversity programming for the division.
Prior to his appointment at the University, Rygg served as dean of student success and retention at Clark College and dean of student services at Multnomah University. He has also held administrative roles in residence life and civic engagement at Washington State University and residence life and housing at Oregon State University. He says his passion is helping students connect their head knowledge with their heart’s desire to make a difference in the world.
Rygg has taught orientation and first-year seminar courses, as well as multicultural and career development courses. He will have an instructor appointment in the higher education and student affairs graduate program at the University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and human resource management from Pacific Lutheran University in 2000, a master’s degree in college student services administration and counseling from Oregon State University in 2002 and his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from Bowling Green State University in 2014.
