Jennifer Snow Mayo, a 2016 graduate of the University of Portland’s School of Education doctorate program, was recently named a 2016-2017 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow. Mayo is one of 13 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers chosen from throughout the nation to receive the esteemed fellowship.
As part of her fellowship, Mayo, a middle school science teacher in Portland, Oregon, recently began an eleven-month internship program at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and at the NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program grants outstanding educators the opportunity to extend their skills and experiences from their local classrooms to national education programs and policy efforts. They can serve within four Congressional Offices and the offices of the program's three sponsors. The latter include the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). All current fellows began their appointments September 1, 2016.
Mayo's doctoral dissertation, From Classroom Teacher to District-Based Content Specialist: Exploring Organizational and Individual Teacher Identity in Science Teacher Leaders, reflected her enhanced role in the sphere of scientific education and STEM educational leadership.
