The Shiley School of Engineering held a Summer Project Showcase in September to highlight industry-based research projects completed by students. Around 25 students worked with University faculty and industry sponsors on 15 different projects with topics that ranged from "Ultra High Speed Photography" to the "Evaluation of Water Retention and Water Quality from Ecoroofs in the Portland Area." Industry sponsors, which included the City of Portland and NW Natural, gave students applied real-world experience in solving the kinds of problems they will encounter in the engineering careers.
"The project enabled me to learn and hone my research skills, as well as implement them in a budding field," Jarrett Okita, senior civil engineering major, said. "Collaborating with students and faculty was a valuable experience that allowed all of us to exchange ideas with each other."
Industry-based research is made possible in thanks to Richard and Diane VanGrunsven, who established "The Richard and Diane VanGrunsven Professor of Engineering." The professorship title was given to mechanical engineering professor Tim Doughty. The VanGrunsvens' contribution works directly to improve the quality and increase the number of co-curricular, hands-on, student/faculty projects conducted during summers in the Shiley School of Engineering.
"The Summer Project Showcase provides an opportunity for the students to present their accomplishments to an audience of alumni, and local industry representatives as well as faculty, administration, and their peers," Doughty said. "It serves as the culminating event for a summer’s worth of work and is really a celebration of the summer project community."
