The German Studies Program and Department of International Languages and Cultures is pleased to announce three awardees of the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) University Summer Course Grants for intensive German language learning in Germany this summer. The awardees are Maria Edwards ’18 (Tübingen), Emily McClung ’18 (Aachen), and Haley Lemens ’18 (Aachen).
Over the past several years, the German Studies Program has made a focused effort to encourage its students to apply for these stipends. This recent group of awardees brings the total number of awards in the last five years to ten. According to Dr. Laura McLary, the grant program provides an extra boost to students’ German language and culture learning. “We see significant improvement in our awardees’ German upon their return from the program,” noted McLary.
The DAAD University Summer Grant Program is competitive and provides funding for a 3-4 week intensive language course and lodging and partial funding for the flight to Germany and incidental expenses. The German Studies Program faculty will begin recruiting junior German majors and minors to apply for the DAAD University Summer Course Grants early in the fall semester. For more information on how to apply, contact Jeffrey White, DAAD summer grant coordinator, at white@up.edu.
