Patricia (Pat) K. Johnson, a member of the University of Portland’s Board of Regents, will be honored this April by the Portland Business Journal at the 14th Annual Women of Influence 2017 Awards. Each year the award recognizes 25 influential business women who, like Johnson, have applied leadership and innovation to make a difference in their communities.

Johnson has been on the fast track since graduating from the University in 1986 with a degree in Communications Management. In over 25 years as a preeminent brand strategist, she has built some of the most successful agencies in the industry, including JohnsonSheen Advertising and the nationally-acclaimed creative ad agency NORTH. But as she likes to remark, “it took a bout with cancer a decade ago for me to learn about the necessity to 'pause' occasionally and refill your well.”

It was during that personal battle with invasive cancer, one in which she prevailed, that led Johnson to seek out alternative approaches to her treatment beyond traditional surgery and radiation. That journey, in which she discovered the power of massage, yoga, chiropractic, and naturopathic medicine, would lead her to apply her business acumen to building a community around holistic health and well-being. In 2006 she created Root Whole Body, a wellness center focusing on movement, food, immunity, and relaxation.

Building on the success of Root Whole Body, in 2010 Johnson launched a new brand strategy consultancy firm, Ammonista. Merging brand strategy with entrepreneurialism, Ammonista’s goal is to work with other leaders to build brands “from the inside out” and, ultimately, to create an investment fund for entrepreneurs who believe that business and a sense of purpose are not mutually exclusive.
