Army ROTC
April 12, 2018
The University of Portland's Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) program provides students with ample and diverse opportunities.
The Army ROTC program is an elective curriculum taken alongside required college classes. It gives cadets the tools, training, and experiences that will help them succeed in any competitive environment. In addition to a normal college experience, after graduation, cadets will be commissioned as an officer in the United States Army.
One opportunity presented to those interested in joining Army ROTC is a newly established $5,000 signing bonus which will be awarded to current college sophomores who can pass the challenge of attending and successfully completing cadet basic camp. Upon returning from training, enrolling in the ROTC advanced course, and meeting all other medical requirements, the Army will contract and pay this $5,000 signing bonus.
After graduation, cadets who have successfully completed the military science requirements will receive a position as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. The cadet may elect to be part of the Regular Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. In addition, ROTC scholarships are available for current freshmen and sophomores. These scholarships pay 100% tuition, cover books/fees, and provide a monthly allowance ranging from $300 - $500.
For those who may be interested in Army ROTC but not interested in being a cadet, the Cadet Command Public Affairs Internship Program is an opportunity available to them. This program is designed as a hands-on, media work environment. Interns should be communication, public relations, journalism or broadcast journalism, and photography majors.
These interns will cover all aspects of Cadet Summer Training at Fort Knox in Kentucky. In a variety of environments, they will tell the stories of the Cadets who are training to be future army officers and share these stories with the American people.
They will work as a 2-3 person team and will be assigned to cover training events in both Basic Camp and Advanced Camp. The teams will conduct research into the training, interview both subject matter experts and Cadets going through the training, and then produce news products that include 60-90 second broadcast stories, articles and photos. The news products are shared on futurearmyofficers.com, YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr, and they are also marketed around the country to hometown communities and university newspapers.
This program will take place from May 29 to August 19, although early release from the program is available if coordinated in advance. Teams will work five days a week and produce 4-5 news products a week. Training is provided to the interns to build their skill sets in their disciplines. Additionally, cross training in other areas of the program are available throughout the summer.
The intent of this program is for all interns to improve their skills and to learn new skills that will make them more marketable when seeking employment after college. Many interns that have participated in the program in the past have had no experience with the military as there is no requirement to have any military or ROTC background.
The signing bonus as well as the public affairs internship program highlight the variety of opportunities available through Army ROTC. Students interested and seeking more information should contact Professor of Military Science, Lieutenant Colonel Dennis McGee: mcgee@up.eduUniversity of Portland
