Deacon Tim Weed to be ordained a priest for the Congregation of Holy Cross on Saturday, April 7

Campus Ministry

April 5, 2018

This Saturday, April 7, the United States Province of Priests and Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross will confer the Sacrament of Holy Orders on three new priests, including Deacon Timothy Robert Weed, C.S.C. The ceremony at 11:00 a.m. (PDT) at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, will be streaming live on the Internet at Ordination-live.holycrossvocations.org.

Deacon Tim’s family will be present at the ordination, as will three Holy Cross priests from UP - Fr. Jim Gallagher, Fr. Dan Parrish, and Fr. Charlie McCoy. Also attending will be Maureen Briare, associate director for music, and nine students from Campus Ministry.

Deacon Tim was drawn to the Congregation of Holy Cross and the order’s mission in education.  “I am a firm believer in the formative role of Catholic education, which I see as a place where different ideas and faiths can meet and have a dialogue,” he said. “So much of what we do revolves around the encounter with the other person. At a Catholic school or university, you are allowed to ask challenging questions, to ponder some of the deep and meaningful parts of life.”

He professed perpetual vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience in September 2017 and committed himself to the common life and apostolic work of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He has been serving his diaconate year in Campus Ministry and in residence at Shipstad Hall at UP. Currently, Deacon Tim serves the Program Director for Liturgy, overseeing liturgical planning for Masses and other sacramental and prayer opportunities on campus.

“I love working with university students. Our students are wonderful men and women who are very devoted to their faith, but aren’t afraid to ask questions and grow in their understanding of faith” said Deacon Tim. “We have a diverse student body here at UP, which presents challenges when working in Campus Ministry.  It’s always a question and consideration of how to make sure that you are able to go deep with prayer and other various things, while also being broadly accessible to the entire student body.”

After his ordination, he plans on returning to his role at UP’s Campus Ministry and continuing to live in Shipstad Hall. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far at UP.  Being able to meet and get to know so many wonderful people has been a great joy for me,” he added. “I love the work that I am engaged in, and I love the way in which it has challenged me to grow and come to know the needs of the campus community. The Holy Cross community has been warmly welcoming, and I think that we enjoy a deep sense of brotherhood together. I am grateful to have this time here, and I look forward to serving the UP community as a priest.”

Prior to his diaconate year, Deacon Tim served in Campus Ministry, Confirmation Program, University of Notre Dame (2011-2012); St. Ignatius Martyr Parish, Austin, TX (Summer 2012); Holy Redeemer Parish, Portland, Ore. (Novitiate Year, Winter 2013); Holy Cross Parish - St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, South Bend, Ind. (2013-2014); Stonehill College, My Brother's Keeper, North Easton, Mass.
