Shiley School of Engineering valedictorian Chris Hampel ’18 made the most of his time on The Bluff. From studying abroad in Austria to his active participation in on-campus life, Hampel looks back at his time at the University fondly and described commencement weekend as a “bittersweet” celebration of his time at UP.
“It was wonderful to have so many friends and family gathered together to celebrate our accomplishments,” Hampel said. “I think everyone made memories on The Bluff that will last a lifetime, so it was sad to say goodbye to the people that were a part of my journey.”
Hampel, who graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and a mathematics minor, credits the University for his success in and out of the classroom.
“UP and the Shiley School of Engineering have prepared me to become a well-rounded individual who can think like an engineer, communicate ideas clearly, and display a versatile skillset in technical and interpersonal realms,” Hampel said.
Along with his classes, Hampel participated in intramural sports year-round, worked as a climbing instructor at the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, and served as president for Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and secretary of the Mechanical Engineering Student Association. Hampel was honored to be named valedictorian of the class of 2018 and to speak at the commencement ceremony.
“It wasn’t until commencement weekend that it finally hit me that I was about to represent my class and speak in front of thousands of people,” Hampel said. “Although it was intimidating , I felt happy and relieved to walk away from the podium knowing I gave UP every ounce of effort I had.”
Next year, Hampel will attend Colorado School of Mines for a master's degree in mechanical engineering and hopes to participate in renewable energy systems research.University of Portland
