University of Portland is ranked 9th nationally among peer institutions as a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers according to a study released by the agency today. UP currently has 12 alumni serving around the world. Since the Peace Corps’ founding in 1961, more than 220 University graduates have become Peace Corp volunteers.

“University of Portland has an incredible staff of professors who encourage a global perspective and hands-on learning,” said Catherine Mattecheck ’17, an alumna and Peace Corps volunteer. “They foster a vibrant intellectual environment that naturally encourages students to break out of their comfort zones. The constant influx of different cultures and peoples fueled my love of travel and showed me the importance of living in a country for a substantial amount of time.”

The Peace Corps annually ranks its top volunteer-producing colleges and universities based on the size of the school. UP’s size places it among the “small school” category and is one of four Oregon universities included in this year’s rankings. Nationally, the State of Oregon ranked 4th for having the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers per capita in 2018.

“We have seen time and again that the colleges and universities that produce the most Peace Corps volunteers focus on cultivating global citizens in addition to promoting scholarship,” said Jody Olsen, Peace Corps director. “I am proud that so many graduates of these esteemed institutions leverage their educations to make the world a better place. They bring critical skills to communities around the world and gain hands-on, life-changing experience along the way.”
