The University of Portland has received a $30,000 grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for a new biology faculty position. This grant is part of the New Faculty Start-up Grants program and is the fifth award that the Murdock Trust has made to support science faculty at UP since 2013.

“Funding from the Murdock Trust has enabled our science faculty to push their research questions further and develop more hands-on research experiences for our undergraduate students. It also ensures that our graduates have the insights necessary to address critical global issues,” said provost Thomas Greene.

This new position will specialize in physiology to help support the high demand among UP undergraduate students for courses related to the human body, as well as research opportunities within the discipline.

“We have worked extensively with the University of Portland to help serve and support the top quality, high caliber work undertaken by their science faculty, both in research and in education of students" said Dr. Moses Lee, senior director for scientific research and enrichment programs at M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. “This grant will help UP continue to strengthen their science education curriculum and give students the opportunity to conduct publishable scientific research and learn from the best faculty possible. We are honored to support student learning at UP and other higher learning institutions throughout the Northwest.”

Since 2011, the Murdock Trust has awarded University of Portland 28 grants totaling $2.3 million to support new faculty positions, student health, and new technology.
