University of Portland School of Nursing dean Casey Shillam, associate dean Lindsay Benes, and assistant professor Kelly Fox have received a $50,000 grant from Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation. This grant will support their project “Nurses Leading Change in Palliative Care for the Houseless with Serious Mental Illness.” Shillam’s funded project “aims to embed a palliative care model into an existing nurse-managed primary care clinic to more effectively address the needs of the seriously mentally ill houseless population.”
“I am excited for the opportunity this grant brings to put a focus on the palliative care needs of one of the most marginalized and vulnerable populations nurses care for in Portland: those who are houseless,” Shillam said. “The goal is to develop a model that can be replicated nationally and embedded into any clinical practice serving those with serious mental illness who are houseless.”
The Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation gave out ten new awards for a total of $500,000 to provide early funding for innovative health care. The foundation focuses on health and health care needs for vulnerable populations, including groups that are economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ people, people who are homeless, rural populations, and others.
The awards were divided into two program categories: Hillman Emergent Innovation Program and the Hillman Serious Illness and End of Life Emergent Innovation Program. Shillam’s project will be funded through the Hillman Serious Illness and End of Life Emergent Innovation Program.
