Pilots Prevent
January 12, 2021
Vitally important to a safe reopening of the University of Portland campus for the spring term will be a comprehensive, multi-level COVID-19 screening strategy. To assist in this effort, UP is partnering with leading national healthcare provider Carbon Health for screening, diagnostic testing, and the delivery of rapid results.
UP faculty, staff and students began receiving notifications on January 8 about plans for various levels of COVID-19 symptom screenings necessary for access to campus. Depending on the level of assigned “designation (based on expected amounts of contact with students, faculty or staff),” screenings will range from mandatory symptom monitoring on a daily basis with frequent COVID-19 testing, to no preventative screenings needed if working or taking all classes exclusively from remote locations.
On-campus screenings for students will formally begin on Monday, January 18, as a prerequisite for residence hall move-in. Should any student test positive for COVID-19, UP has established isolation and quarantine areas for additional symptom monitoring and care supervised by the UP COVID Case Management Team.
Letters to both on-campus students and off-campus students were issued by Rev. John Donato, C.S.C, vice president for student affairs; letters for faculty members were distributed by Elise Moentmann, associate provost; and Sandy Chung, vice president for human resources, sent letters to UP staff.
“The health, safety, and wellbeing of community members are our primary concerns as we embark upon this new semester,” said Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., University of Portland President. “In Carbon Health, we have a partner that has emerged as a leader in COVID-19 testing, tracing, and follow-on care. We are confident in the plans we have developed with Carbon, and we look forward to welcoming students and select employees back to campus soon.”
“We are looking forward to partnering with the University of Portland to support efforts to safely bring and keep students, faculty, and staff on campus,” said Dr. Caesar Djavaherian, co-founder and chief clinical innovation officer at Carbon Health. “The team at Carbon, which comprises clinicians and technologists, is uniquely suited for this work, having cared for more COVID-related patients than nearly any organization in the country, leveraging technology to help prevent outbreaks and provide guidance to those who are infected, at scale.”
