Dear UP Community,
The University of Portland is working with PGE to restore power to campus as soon as possible, but do not expect service restoration until possibly sometime tomorrow (Tuesday). Our campus is among more than 300,000 households and buildings currently without electrical power in the greater Portland metropolitan area. With that in mind, we will again cancel all University operations tomorrow – including in-person and online classes and all remote work – until campus reopens at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, February 17.
In the meantime, Bon Appétit continues to serve meals daily for our on-campus residents. Breakfast hours are from 8:30-10:00 a.m.; lunch from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; and dinner from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Extra blankets and flashlights can be acquired through the residence hall staffs.
The Beauchamp Center now has a backup generator to allow students to recharge their cell phones and other electronic devices until 10 p.m. this evening. For recharging access, we ask on-campus students to come to the Beauchamp Center and use the main floor where chargers will be and places for studying and warming up. Off-campus students are welcome to use designated charging and warming areas on the upstairs level of the Beauchamp Center. Our goal is to protect against the spread of the Coronavirus by asking off-campus and on-campus students to use different areas. Beauchamp Center access tomorrow for charging stations and warming will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Students are reminded to please bring their UP identification and their own charging cords. All face mask and social distancing policies will be enforced.
Finally, we realize that many faculty and staff are also dealing with power outages and weather-impacted travel. Faculty members were contacted by the Provost to request flexibility and understanding with assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. as students navigate the challenges of the weather and power outage. All faculty, staff and students should watch their e-mail, our UP.edu website and social media for status updates tomorrow as our day unfolds.
Stay Safe,
Michael Lewellen
