Residence life is wrapping up the room selection process for fall for returning students and looking forward to a fall that feels more “normal.”

“Our halls will still be somewhat de-densified in the fall with fewer triples and quads than usual,” says Andrew Weingarten, residence life director. “But in most cases, students will have a roommate, and we’ll return to more traditional campus living arrangements.”

Weingarten notes that more rising sophomores and juniors are opting to live on campus next year than have in more recent years. It’s a trend he welcomes, and notes that there are still spaces left for returning UP students if they missed the sign-ups.

What’s new for Fall 2021?

“We learned some lessons about move in this past January, and we’re going to keep the move-in appointments,” says Weingarten. “Parents and students really appreciated the less frenetic pace. They liked being able to find parking spots close to the halls and take their time moving in. So we’re going to keep that moving forward.”

Next fall will also feature some special Orientation programming for sophomores as many of them will be living on campus for the first time. Plans are being developed to allow ample time and opportunities for sophomores and their families to experience, enjoy, and become more familiar with the campus before fall classes begin.

“We’re all really looking forward to getting back to ‘normal,’” says Weingarten. “We know there will still be some COVID safety precautions in place in the fall, but the hope is that we will be able to have many more in-person activities. We’ve gotten really good at hybrid and virtual events, but nothing takes the place of in-person programming.”
