Live Music, Food Trucks, Seminars and Soccer: In-person Orientation is back!

July 27, 2021

Orientation is just three weeks away, and while new students are busy finalizing their back-to-school shopping lists, the Orientation planning committee is hard at work finalizing the details of the fun events they have in store.

On Thursday, August 19, new students arrive for their move-in time slots and begin the exiting process of getting their dorm rooms dialed in for the school year. That evening they’ll attend the All Aboard! Orientation session and get acquainted with their residence hall communities through meetings and activities.

On Friday morning, everyone’s invited to attend the President’s Welcome at 9 a.m. in the Chiles Center. The rest of the morning and early afternoon is packed with meet-and-greets with academic deans and departments, academic interest groups, and sub-groups. All faiths are welcome to attend Orientation Mass at 3 p.m. in the Chiles Center, always an uplifting and thought-provoking way to start off the school year.

Before dinner, from 4-5 p.m., students will gather with their Anchor Seminar groups for a social gathering, while parents and family check out the Beauchamp center for their own social event hosted by Alumni and Parent Relations.

Then it’s time to hit the food trucks at Bite on The Bluff from 5-7 p.m. in the Chiles Center. A wide array of options means there’s something for everyone. And there’s no better way work off a full stomach than cheering on the men’s soccer team as they take on Corban University at Merlo Field from 7-9 p.m.

Saturday, August 21, is a big day of Anchor Seminar workshops beginning at 9 a.m. These are important sessions to help new students learn all the ins and outs of how to be successful in their new college journey. In the late afternoon, students will gather in the Chiles Center to learn effective ways to protect each other and prevent violence in their new community. Then it’s time to kick back and relax to live music on the Fields and Schoenfeldt Lawn from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Sunday’s lineup of activities takes it down a notch, as all students gear up for the start of classes Monday, August 23. Those who wish to audition for the Performing and Fine Arts department should contact the department and schedule an appointment, which will be held Sunday, August 22, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. There’s also Mass from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. In the afternoon, from 4:30-5:30 p.m., new students are asked to attend Can I Kiss You?: A Thought-Provoking Look at Interpersonal Relationships in the Chiles Center.

At 9 p.m. another beloved UP tradition begins, as new students fill the Academic Quad to light candles and soak in the music of the traditional Bell Tower Ceremony — a fitting way to ring in the new academic year.

Be sure to check the Orientation website for a complete schedule and to stay up-to-date on any changes between now and Orientation. And new students should keep an eye on their inbox August 3 for a link to the pre-arrival orientation course launching next week.
