A lot has changed since the last time UP welcomed students back to campus. Namely, nearly everyone is vaccinated. As a result, the quarantine and isolation protocols for those exposed to COVID-19 have changed too.
“We made a big pivot last week,” says Kaylin Soldat, associate director of primary care services at the Health & Counseling Center. “This summer we were asking people exposed to COVID to quarantine even if they were vaccinated, but the policy now is you don’t have to quarantine after an exposure if you are fully vaccinated.” This update to the quarantine policy is in line with the CDC and OHA recommendations for vaccinated individuals.
Students, staff, and faculty who find out they’ve been exposed to COVID get categorized into one of three groups depending on their vaccination and/or infection status, and the do’s and don’ts differ for each one. For example, the testing timeline is different for those who are vaccinated versus unvaccinated, as well as the need to quarantine.
Still, no matter what category, anyone exposed is expected to stay masked, get tested, monitor symptoms, and alert the HCC immediately if they experience any symptoms.
Below is a quick guide to the do’s and don’ts of quarantine and isolation at UP. And remember: “If a student is in one of these situations and has questions, the best thing is to contact the HCC,” says Soldat. “We can provide guidance based on their specific situation.”
