As our students and faculty prepare to arrive on the University of Portland campus to begin the 2022-23 academic year, we want to make you aware of a construction project that will bring temporary changes – and ultimately a new center for design and innovation – to our beautiful Bluff.
On Wednesday, July 27, Skanska, our Portland-based construction partner, will begin installing fencing around the former UP Physical Plant, located between Mehling Hall and the L-P Tennis Center. Demolition of the Physical Plant building will follow, making way for construction of the new Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation – set to open Spring Semester, 2024.

As building construction unfolds, our campus community will experience intermittent noise and disruption. We ask for your patience and understanding as our University builds an inclusive hub for creativity and hands-on, experiential learning. Made possible by a generous lead gift from Darlene Marcos Shiley in memory of Donald P. Shiley, the Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation will become our space for inventors – feeding the imagination and welcoming curious learners from all over the UP campus to intermingle, overlap, and relate in new ways.
