Information About New Construction on Campus – Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation

Engineering

July 23, 2022

As our students and faculty prepare to arrive on the University of Portland campus to begin the 2022-23 academic year, we want to make you aware of a construction project that will bring temporary changes – and ultimately a new center for design and innovation – to our beautiful Bluff.

On Wednesday, July 27, Skanska, our Portland-based construction partner, will begin installing fencing around the former UP Physical Plant, located between Mehling Hall and the L-P Tennis Center. Demolition of the Physical Plant building will follow, making way for construction of the new Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation – set to open Spring Semester, 2024.

Important announcements for UP students, faculty and staff during construction:

Fencing:

  • Temporary fencing will surround the construction site of the new Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation, which will impact access and parking in that area (see attached construction site map).

Parking:

  • The Physical Plant parking lot adjacent to the Tennis Center will be closed starting July 27. *Vehicles parked in this lot must be removed prior to July 27*
  • The parking area behind the School of Nursing Annex will be closed.
  • The spaces on the backside of the Shiley School of Engineering, including the EV charging stations, will remain accessible, as will the entire Commons lot.
  • Parking behind the Tennis Center is open and available – to access it you will have to go through the Commons lot.
  • School of Nursing Annex and ROTC Parking will be available in the lot between those two facilities.

Safety:

  • Throughout the 2022-23 academic year, construction vehicles and equipment will make frequent trips – primarily on the northwest side of campus – from Portsmouth Ave. to the NW campus entrance near Corrado Hall. In addition to obeying construction signs, we ask all members of the UP community to be aware of construction vehicles going to-and-from the site. Please exercise caution around the construction zone – especially at the 4-way intersection by Mehling/Orrico/Etzel Field.

As building construction unfolds, our campus community will experience intermittent noise and disruption. We ask for your patience and understanding as our University builds an inclusive hub for creativity and hands-on, experiential learning. Made possible by a generous lead gift from Darlene Marcos Shiley in memory of Donald P. Shiley, the Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation will become our space for inventors – feeding the imagination and welcoming curious learners from all over the UP campus to intermingle, overlap, and relate in new ways.
