A 15-month collaboration of students, faculty and staff has led to the grand opening of a new Diversity Center in the heart of the University of Portland campus. Located on the first floor of Buckley Center, the 1,300-square foot Diversity Center — triple the size of the previous space — offers a welcoming, inclusive venue for people of all backgrounds to gather, study and engage with each other.
“It’s a joy to see our renovated Diversity Center up-and-running and filled with activity,” says University President Robert D. Kelly, PhD. “The new space is a physical manifestation of our University’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and belonging. I’m certain that it will advance our efforts to ensure that all Pilots feel seen, welcomed and embraced here on The Bluff.”
Construction of the new Diversity Center began in May, following a nine-month planning and design phase involving extensive feedback from across the UP community. “It represents the work of many dedicated colleagues at UP who are committed to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion for all,” says Dr. Eduardo Contreras, Associate Provost for International Education, Diversity and Inclusion.
The new center features a kitchenette, independent study spaces, lockers, staff offices, a media projector and room to relax and interact in a supportive environment. The space is designed to be highly flexible, with furniture than can be configured to support a variety of activities — such as group studying, meetings, dining and movie nights.
"The Diversity Center is another important step in fostering belonging on The Bluff,” Contreras says. “It offers an inclusive, brave, and comfortable space for UP students of all backgrounds to enjoy.”
The Diversity Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Student groups, faculty and staff may book the space after hours (4:30 – 10:00 p.m.) via EMS.
