In a statement released from US Women’s Soccer on July 8th, Rapinoe expressed her tremendous gratitude to her family, teammates, coaches, as well as the friends and fans who have supported her career over the years. She first entered the professional soccer stage in 2006 and for the last 17 years has represented the US on the soccer field over 199 times internationally, including what will be her 4th and final World Cup appearance later this year.
The team leader, affectionately known as “Caps”, also thanked the University of Portland in her statement: “Thanks to all my teammates and coaches all the way back to my first days in Redding, on to college at the University of Portland and of course thanks to U.S. Soccer, the Seattle Reign and especially Sue, for everything. I will forever cherish the friendships and support over the years in this game, and I am beyond excited for one last ride with the National Team and the Reign.” The 2022 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient spent her undergrad years playing on the bluff, helping to bring the Pilots to victory countless times even in the face of season ending injuries. Her indefatigable spirit is also present off the pitch in her role as an ambassador for equality in women’s sports and LGBTQIA+ rights.
We wish Megan all the best in her retirement and look forward to seeing what’s up next for this amazing UP alum.
