The late-October event, staged in Portland, hosted over 6,500 college-level and professional attendees. A total of 1,100 posters were presented at the conference and Dulay’s entry earned the top prize in the Life Sciences – Genetics category.

“It was such a meaningful and valuable experience as I was able to connect with many mentors who were all generous in giving me career and grad school advice,” Dulay said. “SACNAS is a safe space where people from unique backgrounds can come together and connect through science.”

“SACNAS felt like home, and I hope to bring this same inclusive and inviting space on our campus.”

The SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference is the largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity event in the country. It offers access to cutting-edge STEM research projects, professional development sessions, graduate school and career networking, and multicultural celebrations and traditions.

Dr. Molly Matty, an assistant professor in UP’s biology department, served as a mentor to Dulay and the six additional UP students who attended the conference. Matty expressed gratitude for student development funds that made it possible for the students to attend and present their work.

“The National Diversity in STEM Conference is truly a life-changing experience for our students, especially those from minoritized backgrounds who have yet to see themselves as scientists and researchers,” Dr. Matty said.
