Secondary Education and English double major Claire Beaumont has achieved a University of Portland first: She is the first Pilot to receive a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) from the U.S. Department of State.
More than 500 undergraduate and graduate students in the U.S. were selected for the 2024 CLS Program, which offers intensive in-person language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences. This summer, Beaumont will participate in a 10-week virtual CLS Spark language course. She will study Arabic under an international university professor, which could lead to CLS travel abroad opportunities in 2025.
“I was driven to apply to the CLS Spark Program by my desire to explore diverse languages and cultural traditions as an undergraduate and in my eventual teaching career. It is an honor to be a recipient of a Critical Language Scholarship,” Beaumont said.
Beaumont, a sophomore from Seattle, is interested in teaching in a Francophone/Arabic country after graduation. She is a 4.0 student on the Dean’s List, an Anchor Leader, and is a member of the English honor society—Sigma Tau Delta.
“Claire is a strong student and a leader on campus, she is deserving recipient of a Critical Language Scholarship,” said Cara Hersh, UP Assistant Provost of Scholarly Engagement and Career Readiness. “Claire will be an amazing representative of University of Portland and I hope she inspires more students to apply for this exciting international scholarship opportunity.”
