James won the Musical Theater division, competing online with singers from colleges and universities in Oregon, Washington, Alaska and British Columbia. James submitted performances of three songs: “Giants in the Sky” from Into the Woods, “Tonight at 8” from She Loves Me and “Oh Is There Not One Maiden Beast” from Pirates of Penzance to earn the region’s top prize.

UP sophomore Brewer Williams scored a third place regional finish in the Classical category. Williams performed three songs: “Total Eclipse” by G.F. Handel, “Malinconia, ninfa gentile” by Vincenzo Bellini and “Who is Sylvia” by Gerald Finzi. James and Williams both advanced to NATS Nationals, competing in another online round in April, with qualifiers advancing to the national semifinals and finals this July in Knoxville, Tennessee.

“I am extremely proud of the work that these two tenors have put in,” said Nicole Hanig, UP Associate Professor and Director of Vocal Studies. “Both have grown as singers and performers in their first two years at UP.”

In February, Williams and Taylenne Ubieta Johnson represented UP with second place finishes at the Oregon-wide Cascade Chapter Classical Festival. James, last November’s Oregon state champion in the Musical Theater division, will tune up for nationals with a leading role in UP Theater’s performance of “The Prom,” running April 11-14 and April 17-20 at Mago Hunt Theater.
