They chased. They flicked. They conquered. The University’s ultimate frisbee team—UPRoar—is caught up in the pandemonium of an NCAA Division III Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Championship.
UPRoar, making its seventh consecutive trip to nationals, entered pool play in Milwaukee, Wis. as the tournament’s top seed. The UP squad raced by two Minnesota programs in the event’s final four — defeating St. Olaf College 15-11 in the semifinals before outpacing Carleton College 15-13 in the championship finale.
Ultimate Frisbee is a UP-sanctioned club sport and the student community played a vital role in UPRoar’s run to glory. ASUP and other student clubs donated from their budgets to support UPRoar’s tournament travel expenses, according to Associate Director of Student Engagement Elizabeth Parkman.
“We are so proud of what UPRoar has accomplished both on and off the field,” Parkman said. “The team is a model of how extracurricular activities can build community, lasting friendships, and have a significant impact on student experience.
“The players put in so much effort and dedication to their team and we couldn’t be happier for their success.”
Senior co-captain Julianna Galian and sophomore Hayden Ashley led the team in tournament scoring with 18 goals apiece, with senior co-captain Mallori Boddy contributing 17 goals. Galian added 43 assists and is a finalist for the “Donovan” Outstanding Division III College Player Award.
Led by head coaches Elise Hollowell, Rebecca Perston and Daniel Young, UPRoar’s National Championship roster consisted of: Seniors—Mallori Boddy and Julianna Galian; Juniors—Sydney Anderson, Isabel Contreras, Audrey Dewey, Hana Elawady, Charlie LaPorte, Frances Magnuson, Lucia Neyra, Audrey Stineman and Gabrielle Weaver; Sophomores—Hayden Ashley, Morgan Bridges, Emma Giamello, Lili Gudgel, Romy Holland, Annalise Korch, Feliz Matthews and Maryanne Maxwell; First-Years—Katie Anderson, Gaby Dominguez, Summers Filion, Camryn Hines, Jackie Murray and Liv Singh.
