Among colleges in the Pacific Northwest, UP ranks at the very top — #1 on a list that measures “how well each college sets graduates up for financial success,” according to Wall Street Journal reporting on the newly released rankings.

WSJ/College Pulse researchers who surveyed recent graduates scored UP highest in student outcomes categories including graduation rate and “Salary Impact” — the extent to which a college boosts its graduates’ salaries.

“We’re thrilled The Wall Street Journal has recognized the exceptional quality of a University of Portland education,” said President Robert D. Kelly, PhD. “Our remarkable performance in this year’s ranking affirms what we’ve long known to be true; namely, that UP transforms students and prepares them for lives of meaning, fulfillment, and success. We hope that our best-in-region ranking will prompt even more prospective Pilots and their families to consider joining us here on The Bluff.”

While 12 schools in Oregon and Washington made The Wall Street Journal’s Top 500 rankings — only University of Washington (#82) joined UP in the Top 100. Oregon State University (#300) and University of Oregon (#304) were the next highest among the five Oregon schools ranked in the Top 500.

“University of Portland’s remarkably strong student graduation and career outcomes are rooted in our great faculty, our deep commitment to the liberal arts — a hallmark of Catholic higher education — and the effective professional preparation we offer in engineering, business, nursing, education, and many other high-demand fields,” said Provost David Mengel, PhD

The Wall Street Journal reported its latest rankings seek “to reward institutions that showcase demonstrable positive outcomes for students and alumni.” WSJ/College Pulse researchers surveyed UP students and recent graduates on topics covering student life, career preparation, and character development. Survey totals related to student experience, social mobility, and best value factored into UP’s #1 Pacific Northwest and #71 national ranking.

This latest recognition follows University of Portland’s recent inclusion into The Princeton Review’s list of “The Best 390 Colleges — 2025,” and a 4.5-star rating in Money magazine’s summer list of “The Best Colleges in America” — which rates UP among the nation’s premier colleges and universities in quality of education, affordability, and student outcomes.
