Nursing students in scrubs walking on the UP campusOregon’s largest nursing school, which in recent years delivered the largest graduating class of nurses in state history, has a new program record to brag about: 98.25 percent.

That’s the near-perfect number of graduates from the University of Portland’s School of Nursing and Health Innovations who passed the NCLEX in 2024—the standardized license exam required for qualified nurses to enter the most trusted profession.

NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) sets the standard to measure an entry level nurse’s ability to safely and effectively practice in the field. In 2024, UP nursing graduates achieved a Total Pass Rate of 98.25 percent, a measure of all UP nurses who successfully passed the NCLEX exam in the calendar year.

"This very high Total Pass Rate is a testament to the great work of our dedicated faculty, and the strength and relevance of our concept-based curriculum” said Joane Moceri, PhD, RN, Dean of UP’s School of Nursing and Health Innovations. “It also highlights the strong clinical teaching, including simulation, that our students receive. And of course, it recognizes our exceptional graduates who studied for, and passed, the exam as the final step on their journey to become professional nurses."

Moceri said the NCLEX Total Pass Rate is an important metric for prospective students to evaluate how a program’s curriculum prepares students to thrive in the nursing profession. While NCLEX also measures First-Time Pass Rate — the percentage of nurses who pass the exam on their first try — Moceri explained the Total Pass Rate more accurately represents the quality of the school and the strength of its graduates.

“Sometimes it is helpful for a graduate to experience the test once before passing it a second time, and the Total Pass Rate metric allows for that,” Moceri said.
